...Picasso is still before him. For Rubin, the MOMA show is the climax of a career; to have brought off, within three years, two exhibitions at such a level (the other being his Cézanne show in 1977) is in some measure to have altered the history of curatorship itself. Rubin, the Iron Chancellor of MOMA, has set new standards of detail and historical cogency within the museum, and the Picasso exhibit and its admirable catalogue reflect them at every point. It is a final vindication of a program started by Alfred Barr Jr., MOMA's first director, 50 years...
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher tried to answer some of these questions during an extraordinary debate in the House. She said Britain's intelligence chiefs had not wished to tip off Blunt's former employers in Moscow that he had been caught by removing him from his royal curatorship. The security service had told the Queen's private secretary that Blunt was thought to be a Soviet agent; the secretary, however, was also advised that the Queen should not seek to remove him. ...instead of running the Fogg as a sedate mausoleum of art, Coolidge committed the museum to expanded educational services, so that it now serves as both a display center for Fine Arts classes and a workshop for grad students studying curatorship. Coolidge came to Harvard as an assistant professor of Fine Arts in 1947, the year before he became director, and will go back to full-time teaching after stepping down from the directorship. He taught courses most of the years in between and tried to combine the museum staff and Fine Arts Faculty into a single community of scholars...
...Chinese Art (1967). The Oriental Ceramic Society (U. K.) values his membership, as do the advisory committee on Oriental art of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the board of regents of the Smithsonian Institution. The National Art Gallery of Taiwan has a standing offer of an assistant curatorship; and last week Oxford University's Balliol College-the politicians' prep that produced Herbert Asquith, Harold Macmillan, Tory Leader Ted Heath, Defense Minister Denis Healey, and such other luminaries as Arnold Toynbee, Julian Huxley, Graham Greene and King Olaf of Norway-invited the Virginia-born Brahmin to lecture...
