Bright Idea for Polio. Next to a cure, what polio fighters need most is a cheap, quick test. In its early stages, infantile paralysis is hard to diagnose, because the symptoms (fever, headache, upset stomach) may be those of half a dozen childhood ailments. A new drug may seem to work wonders when all the time the patient only had grippe. A new diagnostic test on mice was reported last week in Science by Dr. Pierre R. Lepine, of the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He injects fecal material from suspected polio patients into the brains of five mice. Two days...

...economically orthodox medical thinkers and famed verbal brawls with Dr. Morris Fishbein, editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Deutsch agrees with the A.M.A.'s scientific activities, cooperates with the association in exposing fake drugs and quacks, but he delights in the fact that a cancer-cure artist whom both had exposed sued the A.M. A. for only $250,000, Deutsch...

...Cure for Hunger. In the dark street outside, brightened only by the headlights of the dignitaries' cars, a score or so of Germans watch curiously. A woman mutters savagely: "The Russian women have dresses on now. but you can see they still aren't used to them." The other women murmur appreciatively at the swishing skirts, bright prints and daring necklines that flash quickly from the door to the cars, but one husband says angrily: "Come along home. This is no cure for being hungry." In the dark street, hate blazes furiously-but not too noisily...

...Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn had definite ideas on the best way to cure warts. Tom favored "spunk-water" (rain water in a rotten tree stump). One of Huck's favorite prescriptions required a dead cat: "Why, you take your cat and go and get in the graveyard 'long about midnight when somebody wicked has been buried; and when it's midnight a devil will come, or maybe two or three . . . and when they're taking the feller away, you heave your cat after 'em and say, 'Devil follow corpse, cat follow devil, warts follow...

...charms work? Emotional impulses, Inman thinks, may cure as well as cause warts. Dr. Inman nods knowingly at folklore stories of people getting rid of eyelid styes by rubbing them with wedding rings. He checked 158 patients, found that 92% of those with styes and 80% of those with tarsal cysts (tumors of the eyelid) had "an exceptional interest in birth." Just why such concern should affect eyelids, .Dr. Inman is not sure. But he reasons that "serious chronic inflammations in the body generally might be beneficially influenced by systematic psychoanalysis...
