Less publicized was the Kfar Kassen massacre in 1956, which was carried out by regular army troops. The commander of a battalion along the Israeli-Jordanian border ordered the commander of a Frontier Guard unit to impose a strict curfew from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. on several villages. Anyone leaving his home or trying to enter the village during that time was to be shot. The curfew was announced at 4:30, leaving little time to warn the populace. In particular, many villagers worked outside the village, and there was no way to inform them of the new security...
...Curfew in Addis Ababa starts at midnight, but the shooting in Ethiopia's frightened capital (pop. 1 million) begins long before that. Shortly after sunset, armed members of the city's 291 kebeles (neighborhood associations) take to nearly deserted streets seeking "class enemies of the broad masses" -meaning opponents of the brutal Marxist regime of Lieut. Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam and his military administrative council, known as the Dergue. Scouring slum areas of the capital, kebele patrols kick open doors of mud huts in search of objects that would prove subversive intent. Among them: typewriters and field glasses...

The government's get-tough tactics seemed only to infuriate its opponents-and trouble its supporters...
Bared Chests. Some demonstrators fought police hand to hand with daggers and sticks; others bared their chests and dared security forces to shoot them. Although police backed away from many confrontations, troops in Karachi fired on an impromptu demonstration, which had been organized during a curfew break to allow residents to shop and attend Muslim services. At least 20 people were killed and 200 wounded. Last week's violence raised the death toll to about 250 since the troubles began nearly two months ago. At least 4,000 people have been injured and 35,000 arrested...
...Angola's M.P.L.A. guerrillas. Ngouabi's killing-which Radio Brazzaville laid to "imperialist commandos"-was apparently the work of one Captain Kikadidi, who managed to escape while most of his assassination squad was cut down. An eleven-man military junta assumed power in the Congo, imposed a curfew, closed borders and banned all public meetings...
