...Quake. It was no accident that this repressive law was modified in the year of the great Tokyo earthquake. A current Japanese joke says it took an earthquake to start the emancipation of women, and the atom bomb to set it going again. The 1923 temblor destroyed 60% of the city, killed 143,000 people and ruined many of Tokyo's upper and middle classes. In its aftermath, the educated daughters of these families (education for women dates from the Meiji Restoration in the 19th century) discarded their kimonos, bobbed their hair, donned Western dress and became sales clerks...

Despite Williams' desperate attempts to repair the economy, however, there is no question that his name has become closely linked with the state's troubles in many minds. Although he had been considered a possibility for the 1960 presidential nomination, the current crisis has almost ruined his chances. Even more damaging has been his alignment with liberalism, one which conservatives have gleefully seized as indicative of weakness in the entire Michigan Democratic movement. U.S. News and World Report ran Reuther's picture next to that of Williams in its coverage of the situation, although Reuther had almost no part...

In the midst of the attempts to pay current expenses, Williams was reported to be planning a budget increase of $150 million for fiscal 1960. Observers seem to think that he will succeed in bailing out the current debts through borrowing against trust funds, but it does not seem likely that he will get his increase. The state Republicans...

Fortunately, nobody seems to have communicated all this to the personnel of the current HDC Workshop production. They play Lefty with great conviction, and for all its silliness and narrowness, for all the rigidity of its economic determinism, they prove that the old script has considerable power. Nobody nowadays seems to give a very passionate damn about the poor and downtrodden, including perhaps Mr. Odets, but he did then, and these actors spill out their guts on his behalf in rousing fashion...
