CALVIN and KELLY KLEIN remained true to their design ideals even when dissolving their nine-year marriage: simple, stylish, nothing vulgar. The most puzzled-over and envied couple of their industry didn't even curtail their social schedule. They co-hosted a party and afterward broke the news to gossip diva Liz Smith. Nobody is saying whether the rift was caused by the pressure of being married to a man so famous his name is synonymous with underpants, or whether the oft-repeated suggestion that the marriage was a sham is true. "They intend to make every effort to work...

WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Supreme Court decided Monday on a tight 5-4 vote to curtail punitive damage awards from juries. The court struck down as "grossly excessive" a $2 million award won by an Alabama doctor dissatisfied with his BMW. Althought businesses around the country hailed today's decision as a victory, the ruling did not contain any new legal guidelines for future punitive damages caps. "The Syrians have been under...

He has tried to curtail the Earned Income Tax Credit, a way to ensure that no parent with children can work a 40-hour week while remaining mired in poverty. But now on the campaign trail, Dole is nice enough to point out that, "the real average hourly wage is five percent lower than it was a decade...

Efforts to curtail indecency have been far more efficient in Germany. Starting in 1993 the country's leading TV manufacturer voluntarily included V chips in new sets. The chip can automatically block out movies that the German film-industry board has deemed unacceptable for young audiences. The chip also filters out all TV shows--including soft-core porn--that individual stations decide are potentially inappropriate. The FSF, a TV industry watchdog group, frequently guides networks in scheduling. In December 1994 it convinced the RTL network to run the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on a weekly rather than daily basis, following...
