...Flatheaded, big-nosed, bashful Markus Schussheim, who runs a messenger service, wears sneakers, plays with an oldfashioned, oval bat, concentrates on getting the ball back; the ping pong championship of New York, beating blond, elegant Curt Gerstman, bank employe, once a member of the German international table tennis team; in straight sets...

Threatened with action by the Board, the University authorities, evidently in a fit of obstinate pique, fired all the women, with a curt note that they would later be re-employed as conditions permitted. There seems to be no possible excuse for the authorities' not paying off the women with at least a week's advance. Granted that the persons handling Harvard's financial affairs have to do it carefully and wisely, it is absurd for the richest university in the country to act like a penny-pinching miser. The University does, to some extent, act charitably in employing women...

...Lorraine," greatest statesman of the Right, who was forced by illness to resign on the eve of the Hague Reparations Parley (TIME, Aug. 5). Left cannot lead for long where Right has led. In the Hague emergency M. Briand accepted the thankless, tightrope-walking task. Last week with the curt frankness of an aging, tired man, he told the Deputies that he knew they would soon oust him, begged them in the name of common sense not to do so until the Young Reparations Plan approved at the Hague Conference had been ratified...

...large cities but such strategic towns as El Abadiyeh and Jur-el-Mujami (see map), twin sites of the chief generating stations of the Palestine Power Trust, founded and managed by famed, dynamic Zionist Pincus Rutenberg (TIME, Mar. 4). Neither bristling, florid, militant General Dobbie nor the cold, curt High Commissioner made the smallest vestige of an answer to the week's most vital question: Why were not adequate British forces rushed to Palestine three weeks ago when the Wailing Wall riots unmistakably threatened the nationwide Jew-Arab clashes which inevitably followed...
