Kinski barely registers. In her early scenes with Snipes she is vulnerably cute, after which she just stands around looking hopelessly vacant. She is upstaged by Wen (who played June in The Joy Luck Club). Snipes and Wen have great chemistry, taking an argument about a dress and twisting it beautifully into a full-out tete-a-tete. Snipes' nuanced performance--for which he received the Best Actor Award at this year's Venice Film Festival--makes you wish that he would give up playing generic action heroes and return to more serious acting like that of his earlier work...

Jarmusch doesn't answer, but allows his subject to continue to question his intentions in directing a film about the on-and off-stage struggles...

But the royal kids are cute, the costume and set design are amazing and the Rodgers and Hammerstein score is enough to shell out the bucks and enjoy the show...
Canned synthesizer set on bouncy autoplay, monotone Swed-glish vocals, bare-bones lyrics of dubious syntax-this is the medicine that sweet Doktor Kosmos dispenses. Of course, you'd never actually want to listen to most of it for any length of time, but it's a cute, often masterfully comic item nonetheless...
