He sits on your desk looking intimidatingly like his eponym, the guy that almost conquered Rome, until you need tape and then presto: as you fold his trunk out, he induces a mid-boring-office-chore smile. Only one flaw: Who pays $60 for a tape dispenser...
They changed the tables in Annenberg last week. The new arrangement dismayed me greatly. Instead of long rows of tables, the first-year dining hall transformed for a few days to cute sets of two tables pushed together as squares. I'll admit that the setup did lend Annenberg some appropriate ambience for the special brunch to match the solemnity of its busts and stained-glass windows. But the big squares lacked a certain functionality...
...cute cretins, however, are only one part of the elaborate magic that is The Nutcracker. Over 120,000 people see the show annually, making it the "most popular in the world," according to the Boston Ballet. That title is certainly a well-deserved one. Everything about The Nutcracker is a child's fantasy come true--stunning sets, divine costumes, amazing dancing, a literal ton of plastic confetti snow and 1,200 toe shoes. Well, perhaps all those toe shoes aren't part of the fantasy, but they're still a tribute to the massiveness that is this production...
...games and chaste kisses. It's also weathered the years far better than most other golden age American musicals, with much more grit and character than, say, Oklahoma or South Pacific, which can really test the patience of even the most adoring parents. Plus, high school kids can be cute when wearing loud checkered jackets and faking exaggerated "Nu Yawk" accents...
There are several reasons to catch the current production of Guys and Dolls at the Hasty Pudding Theater, not the least of which is that everyone does look, well, cute. But it would be a mistake to write off this show, which packed the house for several performances last weekend, as something your high school could have done. True, it's the same old story and the same old songs, but there's something striking about seeing it at Harvard that makes this production especially noteworthy...
