Like love songs and The Wonder Years, this book should not be taken in large doses. After reading too many essays in one sitting, they tend to melt together into one lump of sappy, sentimental...well, fill in your own alliteration. The essays lose force because their cute outcomes become predictable. For example, Schnur constantly decorates this stories with "coincidental" meeting with pretty girls and over-blown adoration by neighborhood children...

Julie Sweeney often wonders if her two cute grandsons traded one horrible situation for another when they were uprooted from their mother's home and placed in foster care. Today she has brought Timothy, 11, and Tommy, 9, to court to review their foster-care status. Among the others: the gray wolf, grizzly bear, bald eagle, desert tortoise and, of course, the northern spotted owl. Since the Endangered Species Act, which commits the government to protecting all life forms from extinction, became law in 1973, this select group of animals has received an inordinate share of funding...

...Beat Generation's W.C. Fields -- a raconteur of depravity, a cracker-barrel coroner. Weller gets the haunted look right, but he can't get inside the junkie's pocked skin. Burroughs lived and nearly died there; Cronenberg and the actors are only visiting. The movie is way too colorful -- cute, in a repulsive way, with its crawly special effects -- and tame compared with its source. Instead of an insider's view of drug despair, Cronenberg takes us to the Hell Pavilion at Walt Disney World...
