...further. They show how good Scaggs can be when he sticks his neck out a little. "1993," an appropriately spacy tung, is closer to rock and roll than anything he's played for years. There's nothing fancy here, beyond some tricky synthesizer effects; nothing lyrically precious or musically cute. Director Kagan and Writer Carabatsos borrow freely from other movies-notably It Happened One Night, Morgan!, and Five Easy Pieces-without ever advancing any insights of their own; there are more cute platitudes along Jack's road to self-realization than there are toll booths. ...Reed, in the female lead, is every bit Sellon's match. Reed plays the four women Littlechap uses and hurts most: Evie ("Typically English"), Anya ("Glorious Russian"), Ilsa ("Typische Deutsche"), and Cinnie ("All-American"). With a twist of her scarf, she switches her personality from loud and abrasive to cute and cuddly, and remains fascinating at every turn. Even when she stays on stage during a transition, she never drops out of character. Reed's vocal range and ability to simulate several dialects are also extremely impressive...
