Last week a lonely Coast Guard cutter, the Tampa, was hurrying north to the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. Behind her lay a winter season of snooping after rum-runners off the U. S. Fifty-eight years ago a girl child was born in Ware, Mass., and christened Bertha Ethel. Her father was Charles Knight and her mother Cordelia Cutter Knight (the Cutter family came to Massachusetts in 1630). Little Bertha's brother is named Austin M. He is now a retired admiral. Coach Stevens of the University crew has engaged the Metropolitan Ice Company to commence cutting ice on the Charles River at 8.30 o'clock this morning, it was anounced last night. The Metropolitan Company will employ a gasoline driven ice-cutter in an attempt to break up the ice, and clear the river for the crews. The cutting will be done above the Newell Boat House which will afford the University rowers a fairly long course and will hasten the breaking up of the ice further down the river...
