...report warns that any tinkering with the economy-such as a tax cut in the U.S. or further increases in West German interest rates-will only make the situation worse, and it advises policymakers to sit tight. Their main priority, the OECD advises, should be to reduce oil imports. Says John Fay, head of the OECD's economic department: "We have a long road of rather slow growth ahead...
...wake of Carey's decision, ETS warned that extra research expense would lead to price increases of $4.75 for New York students, who now pay $8.25 to take the SAT. In addition, the frequency of makeup test days and special testing sessions for the handicapped may be cut. After sneak showings of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Steven Spielberg cut only the background song, When You Wish Upon a Star, from the final spacecraft scene, but that small snip changed the mood of the story. Thus it was a stunned Wyler who attended the premiere and watched Heathcliff...
...record vindicates all previous claims of greatness and clears the way for new ones. The melodies of these nine songs are insistent, instantly captivating. The lyrics veer between recollections of the mythic past to reveries of violence, from lines like haiku ("Aurora borealis/ The icy sky at night/ Paddles cut the water/ In a long and hurried flight") to verbal lasers of lancing irony ("Hard to believe that love is free now/ Welfare mothers make better lovers"). Young is in such thorough command throughout that he can jump a century between lines of a verse, begin a song like Powderfinger...
