Twachtman, who studied in Munich and Paris, returned to relative obscurity in the U.S., averaged only $500 a painting. To raise his family, Twachtman had to paint yards of sky on the cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg in Chicago, sketch for Scribner's magazine, and teach. It left a bitter taste. He told students: "You are studying art here now, and some of you will become painters, and a few of you will do distinguished work, and then the American public will turn you down for second-and third-rate French painters...

...better with "Come away, death," a quite lovely piece accompanied by two oboes and a harp. He is allowed to end the show as Shakespeare wrote it, singing "When that I was" all alone on stage. The lights go down, stars come out on a dark blue cyclorama, and Mathews punctuates his five verses with the tintinnabulation of tiny finger-bells. The effect is charming. I do not think the play really works, for no present-day audience is prepared for the stopped action, odd lighting effects, or the projection of a movie on the cyclorama that Pirandello calls for. Perhaps if one were familiar with these techniques the play would turn out to be a very good one. But as it is, it is hard to evaluate, to direct...

Eldon Elder has modified the stage somewhat, and designed the sets. The floor is unraked this year, with a cyclorama behind. A pair of staircases and platforms can be rolled on and off. And there is, at the proscenium, a tripartite portcullis that can be raised and lowered as a whole or in sections, and, when wanted, an opaque curtain just behind it to allow changes of set in back while scenes are played on the extended apron in front. Elder has also fashioned a series of suitable Gothic arches; and, in the garden scenes, even the flower trellises culminate...
