...conservationists, Florida's Big Cypress Swamp, 35 miles west of Miami, is a watery treasure of solitude and variety. Covering 968,000 acres of wetland, forest, rivers and islands, it teems with wildlife, including such endangered species as the Florida panther, alligator, snowy egret and bald eagle. Moreover, the swamp is a major watershed that supplies the vast Everglades National Park, immediately to the south, with a constant flow of vital water. To land subdividers, on the other hand, it seems the next logical place in which to expand Miami's suburbs...
Florida officials are reviewing nearly 400 projects from industrial plants to marinas, some of which may be halted until the builders mend their ways. The state has filed suit against three developers who are draining pine and cypress swamps along the northern border of Everglades National Park. Such work, claims the suit, interrupts the natural flow of water through the wilderness area and upsets food chains. He then pushed through a rule forbidding administrators to negotiate with disruptive students. Last January a straw poll of the 32,000 students at U.T.'s main campus in Austin showed 80% favoring Erwin's impeachment...
Around Lakeland, phosphate miners are tearing huge holes in the earth that endanger the local water table. At the edge of Big Cypress Swamp, drainage ditches for new housing may interrupt the already imperiled water flow into the Everglades. To the north, Walt Disney Productions is building a City of Tomorrow for 50,000 people that may cut off some of Orlando's water supply, since the site is atop porous soil that lets rainwater into Florida's vital aquifer. That underground layer of limestone stores much of the state's annual 57 inches of rainfall...
