...more god than man. He was already a legend during World War II, when he led a feared band of right-wing guerrillas that fought against the German occupation of Greece and, more actively, against Greek Communist partisans. Then in the 1950s his skillful command of EOKA, the Greek Cypriot guerrilla army, ended British control of the island and gained for Grivas a place in the Greek pantheon of heroes...
...image had been tarnished in recent years. The campaign of bombings, kidnapings, and assassination attempts that his revived underground organization, EOKA-B, conducted against the government of Archbishop Makarios had become increasingly unpopular among the island's inhabitants. Most Cypriot Greeks, while holding to enosis as a political ideal, had long recognized the impossibility of forcing the island's Turkish minority (20%) into accepting union with Greece. Even the government in Athens had condemned Grivas' terrorist campaign. And in Cyprus, the general's repute had sunk so low that the House of Representatives, just before...
Black Britons are also beginning to bridge the gap between themselves and Britain's other "coloreds"--the English catchall term applied to blacks of West Indian or African origin, Asians, and even Britons of Cypriot ancestry. Like blacks, Britain's other "coloreds" face substantial discrimination. Asian immigrants live in scandalously poor conditions, and if they are found to have entered Britain illegally, they are sometimes repatriated immediately without their families even being notified...

Another planted a large handbag filled with dynamite at the main entrance. The Arabs were apparently unaware of two things: that there was another entrance closer to Timor's apartment, and that Timor had already left, five minutes earlier...
When the explosion went off, it blew a huge hole in a Greek Cypriot's ground-floor apartment but caused relatively little damage to Timor's quarters. Nobody inside the building was injured. The dynamiter himself was flung to the ground, however, and the getaway car was wrecked. The other three guerrillas left their comrade behind and commandeered another vehicle at gunpoint. They got only 50 yards before they rounded a curve and crashed head-on into a police car looking for the traffic violators. They surrendered, and the injured dynamiter was arrested later at a hotel where...
