Some biologists believe that humanity begins at conception because the fertilized egg cell contains human DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Manhattan Lawyer Cyril Means Jr., among others, finds this line of reasoning unconvincing: each sperm and egg also contain DNA, yet hardly anyone would argue, even metaphysically, that spermatozoa and ova possess the value of human beings...
Moist Gaze. Meantime we have Days. It is a characteristically hefty tome chronicling virtually every day in the life of an admirable West Country schoolmaster-a sort of block off the old Chips. Never mind the subversive rot that Waugh, Orwell and Cyril Connolly wrote about the English public school. Delderfield's Bamfylde is a cozy, character-building place. Pranks are played, faculty rivalries worked out, young minds awakened, while over it all Delderfield nods with the benign and sometimes moist gaze of an Old Boy. There seems to be a streak of self-identification in the author...
...buttons, crooked pockets, puckered zippers, flawed fabrics and mismarked sizes are common. Seamstresses are being deluged with requests from unwary purchasers to patch up the flaws. Customers, retailers and even manufacturers acknowledge that the dress mess is critical. "It is the biggest unsolved problem in retailing," says Cyril Magnin, chairman of San Francisco-based Joseph Magnin, adding, "I spend more time on the quality problem than anything else." Margaret Dadian, vice president for the Midwest's Kay Campbell's Shops, headquartered in Evanston, Ill., calls the problem "the biggest, fattest nuisance in the world; it gets me ready...
Morse, to his initial dismay, is pursued by a bona fide rich senior gentleman (Cyril Ritchard). As Morse dances with Ritchard, comes to enjoy being courted and finally announces that he is engaged, the show achieves both its most comic and affecting peak. On a high order of miming, virtually à la Marceau, Morse captures the tremor, tenderness, coquettishness and vulnerability of a girl's first love. Morse is an enormously personable stage presence, and he knows it. The trouble is that he gratuitously does twice what he has perfectly done once. He is a child of excess...
...experience shouldn't be too much of a drag on his career. On the other hand, Robert Morse--whom I find fey and distasteful to begin with--is here quite genuinely funny. His second-act burlesque of a young girl in love is the show's one redeeming feature. Cyril Ritchard appears as the dirty old man who inspires Morse's affection and generally lives up to the role...
