...wish,/ It is later than you think ..." Since he had no money of his own, Auden simply let his pen for hire, and it was one of the fastest in the West. His poetry continued to flow, but so did documentary scripts, radio plays, librettos, travel books, speeches, essays. Cyril Connolly marveled: "It is as if he worked under the influence of some mysterious drug, which gives him a private vision, a mastery of form, and of vocabulary...

...when -did life begin? Cyril Ponnamperuma, 55, a Ceylon-born geochemist at the University of Maryland, has been seeking answers to this question for much of his career. He has created precursors of life in laboratory simulations of the earth's primitive atmosphere and while with NASA in 1970, identified amino acids (the building blocks of protein) in the Murchison meteorite, which had fallen in Australia a year earlier. Years later it was apparent that the vivacious style had been based on profound disgust...

...delights is its title, taken from T.S. Eliot's Gerontion: "Thoughts of a dry brain in a dry season." Despite the calendar, which says he is 84, Gerald Brenan has a luminous mind and an ageless talent. His collage of quotes, aphorisms and observations, in the style of Cyril Connolly's short masterpiece, The Unquiet Grave, deserves a permanent place on the night table. Opened at random, it will provide a refreshment, and occasionally a shock, on nearly every page. Brenan can sometimes be wrongheaded, but he is never dull...
