EUROPE Storms Deal Out Death and Destruction L ethal summer storms lashed a swath of countries from the Atlantic to the Black Sea. The Italian government declared a state of emergency in northern Italy following violent downpours that devastated beaches, farms and vineyards. In the Czech Republic, rivers burst their banks, killing two people and forcing the evacuation of 2,000. Rising waters also isolated several Austrian towns and washed away bridges. In Romania two people drowned in flood waters. But worst hit was Russia, where 18 holidaymakers were found dead on the Black Sea coast after flashfloods destroyed their...

Little Village and Pilsen used to be Czechoslovakian, Polish and German ethnic enclaves, closely tied to a junction of railways that engulfed the Near West Side. The early Czech settlers in Little Village honored the Old Country by naming the church Blessed Agnes of Bohemia. Now, the church serves the largest concentration of people of Mexican-descent in the Midwest. I doubt that many parishioners or congregants wonder about the church’s remote name. Newspapers called for Hiddink's head, railing at him for cruelly pitting the Koreans against superior sides. But the controversial strategy paid off, as the team learned how to sustain its stamina against mightier squads. Three of Korea's key World Cup goals have come late in the game, when Portugal, Italy and the U.S. were...

...life's work. A press statement introducing his latest album observes, in all seriousness: "He can't say himself how many times he has been married since his return from prison, and God alone knows how many children he has fathered throughout the Balkans." The gypsy diva of the Czech Republic, Vera Bila, meanwhile, has performed at the Hollywood Bowl and London's Barbican. But until a few years ago she was working odd jobs cooking and cleaning. Whatever the roots of their popularity, these musicians may be helping preserve the cultural traditions of an entire region. Bands like Taraf...
