...dreamy or daft enough to think of ourselves as superheroes in the comic book of our lives? Are we not tickled to think that the world is somehow dependent on our skills and charisma? And do we not come to understand, in the bleak clarity of reality, that some heroes--especially the one staring at us in the bathroom mirror--will never be truly super...

...hundred subgenres a year. But I'll hazard guesses about the near future. What I loved in 1998 was the emergence of the French disco house genre with a retro sound that explored house music's roots and brought back a lot of the element of fun, including Daft Punk's Homework album and the song of last summer, Stardust's "Music Sounds better With You." It continued this year with Cassius's 1999, an excellent disco cut-up pastiche work, and I'm hoping for more quality Gallic crossovers. I also think the stunning new Armand van Helden...

Goddard was thrilled with his triumph but resolved to say little about it. If people thought him daft when he was merely designing rockets, who knew what they'd say when the things actually started to fly? When word nonetheless leaked out about the launch and inquiries poured into Clark, Goddard answered each with a pinched, "Work is in progress; there is nothing to report." When he finished each new round of research, he'd file it under a deliberately misleading title--"Formulae for Silvering Mirrors," for example--lest it fall into the wrong hands...

...Prince remake (thankfully), but another release in the French disco house genre that entered the global consciousness last year with the enormous success of Stardust, Daft Punk, and Bob Sinclar. Cassius comprises ace French producers Boombass and Philippe Zdar, and their experience as DJs (Paris's Respect is Burning; London's Basement Jaxx) and musicians (Motorbass and La Funk Mob) shows. The album's delectable pastiche of 4/4 beats, cut-up vocals and instruments, and funk-tinged deep bass (even the Foxy Brown theme gets sampled) creates some of the most massive tunes to hit the dancefloor, including the storming...

...daft, inspired, yet miraculously unhammy star turn. Short doesn't merely show off his versatility (how about that German accent, folks!); he creates a string of finely crafted caricatures. Truth be told, the Neil Simon-Cy Coleman-Carolyn Leigh musical hasn't aged all that well. Based on Patrick Dennis' satiric memoir of a fictional grande dame of the stage and screen, it's too sketchy and weightless, with a rather severe dramatic flaw: the central character (played by the full-voiced, full-figured Faith Prince) is constantly upstaged by her multi-role-playing co-star...
