Endorsements cascaded in. Indeed, the final rush to Carter began even before the Super Bowl votes were counted, and it was led by that shrewd old power broker, Chicago Boss Richard Daley. Carter had long been courting the mayor, often visiting him when he went through Chicago and phoning him every ten days or so. Months ago, Daley told close friends that "what we need is young, fresh blood in the party," and his cronies figured he would ultimately come out for Carter (TIME, March 29). At a press conference last Tuesday afternoon, Daley predicted that Carter would...
After the Ohio vote came in, Illinois Senator Adlai Stevenson released the 86 delegates that Daley's machine had won for him as a favorite son. George Wallace urged his 168 delegates to support Carter. If all those delegates voted for Carter, he would have the 1,505 needed to nominate. Scoop Jackson and Frank Church were expected to endorse him soon...
...following his talk with Rosalynn Carter, Jordan called his staff together for a meeting. The group around the table looked awfully young, but they were tossing around big names: Mayor Abe Beame was aboard, one said, and that would help with the Jewish voters, and Chicago's Dick Daley was issuing compliments. Staffer Rick Hutchinson, who at 24 looks like one of the painters of Tom Sawyer's fence, spoke of Tennessee Governor Ray Blanton being the key to that state's uncommitted bloc and the chances he would deliver its nine delegates. There was talk about...
Then Jordan talked of the three big targets: Scoop Jackson's 249 delegates, Daley's 88, and George Wallace's 200. If Carter has 1,200 delegates or more after the last primaries, any of these three Democratic leaders could certainly help clinch the nomination for him. Predicted Jordan: "We'll find someone out there who wants to be a hero." Even before Scoop's decision, the Carter group believed the Jackson delegates might well wind up with them. Carter, at the same time, has been calling Daley every ten days...
Adlai himself would have some input, of course; even now he is no Daley puppet. Stevenson is known to lean toward the Humphrey-Muskie wing of the party (Daley, on the other hand, dislikes Humphrey). Additionally, there is some reason to believe Stevenson might not yearn to be vice-president. But providing he would accept, it is conceivable Daley might try to pull the whole thing...
