Jury selection began for the trial of two of the young men accused of beating truck driver Reginald Denny during the riots in Los Angeles last year. Damian Williams, 20, and Henry Watson, 28, were allegedly hitting and kicking Denny when they were captured on videotape by a news helicopter. The two men are charged with attempted murder and other felonies in the attack on Denny and seven other victims. Another defendant in the case, Antoine Miller, 21, is also charged with attempted murder, but will have a separate trial...
...supporters say the L.A. 5 are being treated like convicted criminals, though none of the charges against them have been proved. "Holding them in jail creates a punishment for these men who should be considered innocent until they are proven guilty," says Dennis Palmieri, the lead attorney for defendant Damian Williams. Not so, says Reiner. "There is only a single standard of justice," he says. "That standard is that where a crime has been committed, it will be investigated and it will be prosecuted...
...chief Daryl Gates elatedly joined in the arrest of three suspects wanted for the beating of truck driver Reginald Denny at the outset of the Los Angeles riots. Leading the 2 a.m. raid into South Central with flak jacket and side arm, Gates personally collared one of the suspects, Damian Williams, whose nickname is "Football," and escorted him into a squad car. Declared Nickie Borley: "I would have died if they put me through that kind of pain." Said Jacquie Hollingsworth: "I'm not sure that I would have stood up for what I believed in, like you did, but then again, I'm not half as brave as you are." Nearly all had questions: "Do you have nightmares?" "Do you still have scars from the handcuffs and the kicking...
...fault is Damian Bagdan's for sounding too sincere. He's sincere enough to convince a Real-Man seeker, a traditional girl, a Prudence; to marry him, unless it's the speed and confusion of events which carry her to the submission point. These, plus the sharply-directed timing, carry the audience along with her through this production of Beyond Therapy. Yes, the set changes are distractingly clumsy, and the flatly acted waiter who finally shows up in the last scene is a detraction. With these problems, though, this is a play worth seeing, if only to laugh out loud...
