Zentropa gives signs that the answer is yes. This existential melodrama was originally known as Europa, and Danish director Lars von Trier's ambition is that vast: Continent-wide. Set on a German train rumbling through the rubble of World War II -- but suggesting the recent chaos of post-communist Europe -- Zentropa plays like a hallucinogenic remake of The Third Man. A naive American, Leo (Jean-Marc Barr), walks into a web of political duplicity spun by a desperate provocateuse (Barbara Sukowa), a cynical Allied officer (Eddie Constantine) and lots of supporting sharks and werewolves. And where is Harry Lime...
Like most of Keillor's work, WLT is set in Minnesota and features characters of prime Midwestern stock-Lutherans, many of them of Danish descent. Ray and Roy Soderburg are sibling entrepreneurs in Minneapolis trying to scrape by in the restaurant business when one of them-they argue as to whom-suggests broadcasting live from the dining room to attract business. "There are great ideas and then there are revolutions and by gosh radio is one of them, it's going to be a Radio Age'...they each remembered saying...
...diplomats seem almost breathless in their rush to return. The first new ambassador on the scene was Denmark's Otto Borch, who said, "No assignment I have received has brought me greater pleasure than this one." Somehow the Latvians managed to find a handful of red-and-white Danish flags to wave as they cheered his arrival in Riga last week...
Another problem is that Soviets lack what Oberlin President Starr terms "horizontal links among citizens," the clubs, professional societies and voluntary associations that in other countries foster the habits of political give-and-take. At the end of the 19th century, Danish historian Georg Brandes called czarist Russia "a bureaucratic state where official power has destroyed all spontaneous and natural growth in the relations of public life." His description would have fit the Communist state even better. Partly in consequence, aspiring leaders have had nowhere to learn the arts of compromise and coalition building indispensable to democratic politics...
Gram-negative bacteria -- so named because they do not retain a laboratory stain devised by the Danish bacteriologist Christian Gram -- are usually harmless. They reside on the skin and in the gut, where they aid in digestion. But any significant disruption to the body's immune response -- caused, for instance, by severe burns, chemotherapy or major abdominal surgery -- allows these rod-shaped bacteria to multiply out of control and invade other parts of the body, eventually entering the bloodstream. Once there, one part of the bacterial cell wall called endotoxin can trigger a cascade of lethal effects, culminating in multiple...
