...Similarly, an eclectic mix of cheery students and weary proletarians converge. They brush against one another in dank corridors, share impatient waits for lazy trains and lock in forced, anonymous embrace on packed cars...
Visitors to the grotto-like Ocean Learning World experience the mysteries of the sea. Wending their way through a dank cavern, they are suddenly plunged into an aquatic research center lined with industrial-steel walls and exposed pipes. There they can park themselves in a yellow submarine once used for deep-sea exploration or watch wet-suited guides equipped with scuba gear investigate a simulated shipwreck in an 85,000-gal. tank...
...discovers an ugly crime, an unsuspected gift for intellectual detective work and, eventually, a romantic attachment to Washington's character as the two try to ensnare a particularly unpleasant serial killer. The tale also has little of the pulpy juice of the B-movies Kaplan made in the '70s. The only guilty pleasure is watching Danes' wildly noble emoting. Her tears are as strong as a porn queen's orgasm...
