...been the movie norm, from the Bela Lugosi Dracula in 1931 to today's Twilight saga. But there's another view of the tradition, an alterna-vamp, that begins with the first important horror movie, F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu, and was touched on in Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark and the Francis Coppola Dracula. It's the vampire as pure predator, a gaunt, subhuman pestilence, the ultimate parasite whose host is the rest of us. Nothing sexy about these creatures, or their act of feasting on our blood. Avatar has now beaten, crushed, spindled and mutilated the competition for four weekends in a row, the first movie to do so since The Dark Knight in the summer of 2008. This week it will also become the first Hollywood feature film to top $100 million worldwide in specialized IMAX theaters - which charge more per ticket, as do the 3-D showings in regular theaters, and help boost Avatar's overall numbers. ($435.1 million) and Shrek 2 ($441.1 million) in a few days, and by next weekend it will overtake the original Star Wars ($461 million) for third place. That vaulted it past three of the four other billion-dollar movies: The Dark Knight...

There are feelings down there too - old, dark, unmapped feelings - and I'm going to have to deal with them before the fear leaves me alone. My phobia is a part of me - an ugly part, by the looks of it. I'm going to have to get to know that demon better. Because it's not going to leave till it's good and ready...
...President of 30 years, Ali Abdullah Saleh, with unifying north and south Yemen in 1990 and with holding on to the unification during a civil war four years later. "You should have seen it," Ghalib Onkumah, a teacher, says, shaking his head and making a face. In the dark days before Saleh took over, there were endless tribal and civil wars, he says. Onkumah, like many Yemenis, is confident that Saleh will maintain control of the country despite the looming threat of state failure. (See why Yemen faces an al-Qaeda threat despite increased...
