...angry denial, which all Berlin afternoon papers repeated under big black headlines. "It was intended only to plunge the peoples of the world into anxiety, as everyone will immediately realize, so that the campaign of lies of the English warmongers would find it easier to accomplish its dark plans." This plunged Germans into visible gloom, some weeping openly in the streets of Berlin. Thus in no uncertain fashion did the anti-Nazi Freedom Station show Adolf Hitler how jumpy were the nerves of his people, how desperate their longing for peace in spite of their great victory over Poland...
Sept. 22, 1914 was a dark day for the British Navy. Three cruisers, Hogue, Aboukir and Cressy, were patrolling off the Dogger Bank, near Ymuiden. High seas raged in the wake of a storm, forcing the cruisers' protecting screen of destroyers to scuttle for home. The Admiralty figured that if the sea was too rough for destroyers it was too rough for U-boats too, that the cruisers were therefore safe. That was a mistake. Royal Oak* was a battleship of 29,150 tons, built in 1914, and her loss reduced from 15 to 14 the number of Britain's capital ships. The time and place of the sinking were not officially...

She grew slowly, like a plant in the dark; her rosy face turned white and blank. One day last week, six-year-old Maxine at last awoke. During her long sleep, she had lost her ability to talk, walk, or command her muscles in any way. She recognized no one, instinctively gulped her food like a newborn infant...
...outbreak of World War II was a considerable embarrassment to British spiritualists. Before September 1, British spiritualist publications and practitioners were almost unanimous in proclaiming that their country would have ten or more years of peace. Last week, admitting that their faith was undergoing a dark hour, spiritualist apologists offered two explanations for the discrepancy between fact and forecast...
