Folds came first came into prominence in 1995 as the pianist, singer and primary songwriter for the ironically named Chapel Hill trio Ben Folds Five. With Darren Jessee on drums and Robert Sledge on bass, the group soon found a niche in the indie-rock scene. Their self-titled debut album betrayed the band’s powerful combination of Folds’s reckless piano playing, angst-ridden, intelligent lyrics and uncanny ability to write addictive hooks. ...After three hits (the third was Doc Pomus? "Plain Jane"), Darin could have been pegged as a smarter Bronx version of Frankie Avalon and other Philadelphia Italians Clark was promoting; or maybe a less handsome relative of teen throb James Darren. The client, a 73-year-old bookkeeper in Hollywood, Fla., agreed to put nearly $200,000--or roughly 80% of his liquid net worth--into a stock he'd never heard of, Sigma Design. "I was buying like crazy on margin," says the bamboozled bookkeeper. "And I got wiped...

...latest offering from Darren Hayman and the Scottish trio Hefner, We Love the City is a nicely compiled group of songs that definitely leave the Scottish hills in its wake in order to get absolutely bolloxed in an English pub. Unfortunately, the effect is probably a little more sobering than the band intended.  We Love the City contains a couple of bonus videos, and the band dons the most amazingly surreal skin-colored body molding outfit (members flailing and all) for the video of “Good Fruit” that makes Blink 182?...
