She is likely to take a gentle approach in undermining the accuser's testimony. "I don't think you need to tear apart the victim," says Phoenix attorney Darrow Soll, who got charges dropped against Mike Tyson in two recent rape cases. "What you can do is say, 'Let's talk about the fact that a 19-year-old girl had sex with a basketball player who was married, and maybe her boss found out. What...

Deponent herewith stipulates that he will not challenge the Wachowski brothers' claim to have read Hesse, Homer, the Gnostic Bible and the comic books of Geof Darrow. Philosophes as diverse as Cornel West and Keanu Reeves have testified to the range of the Wachowskis' erudition and their devotion to high-minded subtextual references in their action movies. Granted, any dialogue in which Costner is trying to carry half the burden is going to be excruciating, but several exchanges in the film leave one wondering where to place the blame—on the stilted script or the poor acting. At one point, Darrow walks up to a table of friends at a bar, who toast his recently deceased wife (“Here’s to Emily!”) just like most people would toast a good night at the bowling alley or the purchase of a new car. It is a wonder that...
