...unraveling of the DNA double helix was one of the great events in science, comparable to the splitting of the atom or the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species. It also marked the maturation of a bold new science: molecular biology. Under this probing discipline, man could at last explore?and understand?living things at their most fundamental level: that of their atoms and molecules. Once molecular biology was sardonically defined as "the practice of biochemistry without a license." Now it has become one of science's most active, exciting and productive arenas, taking the limelight (and some...

Scopes challenged a state law forbidding the teaching of Darwin's theory of evolution. The trial produced one of the great confrontations of U.S. legal history, pitting Clarence Darrow, the noted civil libertarian, against Prosecutor William Jennings Bryan, famed as a fundamentalist orator and three-time Democratic presidential candidate. One rare and classic exception to this rule, the peppered moth, underwent a major alteration during just 50 years in 19th century England-thus providing living proof of Darwin's still controversial theory of evolution. Now, three English scientists say, the peppered moth is at it again, changing rapidly once more in order to survive...

...Between 1952 and 1964, in a continuing survey made near one industrial town, not a single speckled moth was found. Eventually, this example of evolutionary forces at work became standard fare in college biology courses, illustrating the adaptability of organisms to a changing environment or-as Darwin called it-the principle of natural selection...
