Intended as a standard handbook on diplomatic theory, procedure and preparation of novices for the foreign service, Diplomacy is clearly, suavely, concisely written, with scarcely a dash of famed Nicolson irony to spice its correct Protocole. ...Olympics, the No. 1 hero was Negro Jesse Owens of Cleveland, winner of the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and broad jump. It had proved that in peacetime it could move quickly into positions to counter a "French" invasion, but from there on what would happen is guesswork. In last week's maneuvers it disposed of the imaginary enemy after several days of "fighting" and pressed on toward Mt. Thabor, an Italian bastion jutting deep into France. Corriere della Sera chestily observed: "If it were possible to carry out the experiment beyond the frontier realism would be perfect...

No politician, tweedy Sir Timothy lives a squire's life in Durham County has written two books (The Tribulations of a Baronet, Five Dogs and Two More), likes to dash off oil paintings of friends in the family armor, himself amid the family books.
