...plans to start paying back its government loans this month. Repaying the direct government loans well ahead of the 2015 date contemplated by the Treasury Department when it helped GM reorganize during the bankruptcy is the first step toward an initial public offering of stock in the new GM. While GM received more than $50 billion in federal aid, only about $6.2 billion will be repaid in cash; the U.S. Treasury agreed to take stock in lieu of cash for much of the remainder, which gave the government a 60.8% stake in the new GM. This is the most up-to-date study that attempts to quantify the impact of the H1N1 virus, the impact of which has been steadily decreasing in severity since it first hit the U.S. this April...
Google has another court date it is preparing for. Paris publishing group La Martinière took Google to court after it discovered the firm had scanned and archived books on which La Martinière holds the copyright. Instead of hitting the elderly the hardest, though, most of the deaths may be among young children...
Despite Ssempa's beliefs, experts say the law would impede efforts to stem the spread of HIV and AIDS, especially among the category of "men who have sex with men" - the terminology often used because of the stigma around being openly gay or bisexual. Many homosexuals marry or date women and identify themselves as heterosexual even though they are sleeping with men. That community is disproportionately affected by the disease in sub-Saharan Africa, in part because of a long-standing unwillingness on the continent to acknowledge homosexuality. Indeed, the situation is one of double jeopardy, combining the pariah status...
