...announcement of the conditions of the Sargent prize for the best translation of one of the epodes of Horace, is well calculated to stimulate an interesting competition. While the date which has been fixed is somewhat unfortunate, sufficient time will be allowed for any earnest writer to complete the work. This prize will serve as a valuable supplement to the Bowdoin prizes and offer a premium for excellence in poetical composition. Some complaint has recently been expressed that rhythmical construction is totally neglected in all our English composition courses, and that college poetry is wholly an affair of college periodicals...

Yesterday, Dr. Hart exhibited to members of History 13 a very curious book, once the property of John Harvard, entitled "The Christian Warfare against the World, the Flesh, and the Devil." The date of the publication of this book is 1634. The book is of special interest in being the only one saved from the great fire which long ago destroyed the Harvard library, and so is the only reminiscence of the founder of the university which we possess...

...site for the proposed building, and has shown great interest in the project. Energetic efforts are being made in this country to raise funds for the building. It is estimated that the building will cost about $20,000, of which amount only $4,000 has been subscribed up to date. The house at present occupied by the school at Athens is not adequate for its purposes, although an exhorbitant rent is paid. Besides this expense of over $1,000, the several colleges are obliged to support the directors of the institution. The plan now is to raise a fund sufficiently...

...publish to-day Columbia's challenge to the freshman class. Extended comment upon the challenge at this early date is hardly necessary. We believe that eighty-nine will show the energy and enthusiasm, shown by other classes, in their efforts to get a victory over the Columbia freshmen. '86 and '88 both won their freshman races with Columbia. And if there is anything in precedent, '89 should win next year. The Spectator very rightly says: "A reliance upon skill and strength, however, will be found to be more useful than precedent when they come to start next June." We believe...

NOTICE TO SENIORS. - Sittings for the class photographs are not being made fast enough. The number made is less than that of previous classes up to date. Unless 75 more sit before the holidays, the heliotype album cannot be considered, as all the sittings must be made earlier to get it. In case enough sit to warrant it, a book will be placed at Bartlett's for those who wish the album, which will contain the members of the class, and if 100 are ordered, will cost $21, and if 50, $22.50. The '83 album can be seen...
