...passenger and sometimes stopping at bus stops, but others profited by charging illegally high amounts for short distances. Francine N. Schweitzer, a commuter from Westchester who was able to take a cab for metered fare from Grand Central Station on the first day of the strike, said her daughter had a taxi driver who tried to charge her $25 to get from the West Side to the East Side. Several taxi drivers refused to comment on fares during the strike. Small retail businesses, which make some of their biggest profits during the holiday season, are faced significant losses...
...Jarrett, daughter Lori Jarrett (the company's CEO) and son-in-law Ram Sethuraman (director of the company's board) got VirtuosoWorks off the ground could make its own opera--not off-Broadway but offshore. It's a tale about the possibilities and perils of outsourcing. It begins in the 1980s, when Jarrett, a music professor, created MusicPrinter Plus, a program to compose music onscreen and play it back on a synthesizer. Daniel (Aidan Quinn), an Episcopal priest in an affluent New York City suburb, has a lot to talk about. His son Jimmy has died of leukemia; son Peter (Christian Campbell) is gay; adopted son Adam (Ivan Shaw) is bedding the teenage daughter of an influential parishioner. His brother-in-law has disappeared with $3 million of church money. To take the edge off, Daniel has been turning not only to Jesus (Garret Dillahunt...

The most glaring parallels are to HBO'S Six Feet Under, with its Episcopal repression, uptight gay son and angry, artistic daughter. On Daniel, the network leash keeps tugging distractingly. Peter, like so many other gay TV characters, is conveniently "getting over a breakup," and in the pilot, Daniel has to have a pat moment of connection with each of his children before the credits roll...
...Waiting on the platform for the downtown 1 train, Steven, 55, was bringing his daughter Star to her first-grade class three miles away-a 10-minute subway trip that took an hour on foot during the strike. "Yeah, we're happy to have them back," he says, "but they just chose to strike this time of year so they could inflict maximum damage. It's reprehensible...
