...Squad in question is three kids, a white boy, a white girl, and a black boy. The girl, the run-away daughter of a prostitute, was picked up by the police for vagrancy. The white boy, who had been thrown out by his rich family, was arrested for car theft. And the black boy was busted during the Watts riots. The three have been given "a second chance" by the cops. They are trained by the police as undercover agents, so they can work for the cops on cases involving teenagers. The premise of the show is rich in unintended...
HOWEVER, when the director, Robert Ellis Miller, turns to the other subplots, he mangles them. The black doctor's relationship with his establishment daughter--one of the book's most perceptive delineations--plays like a Black Power version of Secret Storm. Its climactic carnival scene is as baroque as the conclusion of Sinatra's Some Came Running. Stacy Keach, of MacBird, is left with nothing to do. ...grist for Peyton Place but, blaring out of radios and jukeboxes, this titillating recital is selling 3,000,000 records. It is Harper Valley P.T.A., a thumping, country-flavored song about a smalltown widow. Her high skirts and low life are criticized by the P.T.A. at her teen-age daughter's school. She storms into the P.T.A. meeting and graphically exposes the membership as a bunch of hypocrites...

Nonetheless, they manage to balk a blackmail-and-kidnap plot involving a gubernatorial candidate (his daughter is on acid). The dialogue staggers to keep pace. Sample: "Ain't it the mother truth?" Despite the fresh faces-particularly Williams'-Mod Squad is at best an old-fashioned caper in a contemporary setting...
