...deals pre-eminently with the part of Joan that is the saint--the part that is literally inspired, that feels fierce loyalty to its "voices" and defiance toward the ways of the world. Typically, when the Maid has rejected the restraining advice of the Archbishop, of Dunois, and the Dauphin, she raises "her eyes skyward" and declares: "I have better friends and better counsel than yours." This is a Joan who inevitably rouses the world to hate her and to burn...
Among the cast Kent Smith stands out as the Earl of Warwick, capturing perfectly that character's businesslike, practical, self-assured--in a word, English--qualities. Michael Wagner as the Dauphin stammered over his "B's" with considerable skill (and historical accuracy) and gave a good impression of weak mindedness. Frederic Tozere contributed a nice stolid manner and sermon-practiced voice as the Archbishop of Rheims. Earle Hyman as the good-natured general Dunois was methodical and colorless at first but picked up personality as he went along; and Ian Keith, Earl Montgomery, and Thayer David portrayed well three different...

Paul and his borrowed French Breguet-901 were towed aloft by a powered biplane, released at about 2,500 ft. With the rest of the pack he circled the field and eased gently toward the Alps. Mt. Ventoux (6,011 ft.) separated the men from the boys; many contestants turned back. To Paul, the problem seemed familiar-it was no tougher than soaring along the lee side of the Sierra Nevadas back home, where he had once reached...
...prevailingly playful tone. What is weakest is its dialogue, which is too seldom really bright and too often near-neighbor to the gag. Fortunately, a number of lines that were not born witty achieve a certain wit through the adroitness of the cast. Margaret Sullavan, Claude Dauphin, and Robert Preston as the tycoon, lend a certain airy charm, provide a certain steady carbonation...
...himself. When other actors faltered -and every member of the excellent cast, except Boris Karloff as the judge, was jittered off top form on opening night -Julie upbore them. As the final curtain fell on a flaunting pageant of Joan's triumph at the coronation of the Dauphin (Paul Roebling), the first-nighters rose with a roar. They gave the cast eight curtain calls and Julie a standing ovation as she dissolved in tears...
