This was not the way the script was supposed to turn out. Dave Johnson and Dan O'Brien, the rival U.S. decathlon stars who have been battling for three years to see who would capture the "world's greatest athlete" laurels in Barcelona, last week met on a rain-soaked track at Azusa Pacific University outside Los Angeles to film a hastily rewritten Reebok shoe ad. As they waited for the cameras to roll, their conversation remained on emotionally safe subjects like new golf clubs. There was no discussion of O'Brien's memorable miss in the pole vault...
...times Buford's mesmerizing account borders on the Dave Barry-esque. "Looking around me," he recalls as the lads of Manchester United's feared Red Brigade run riot in the unsuspecting Italian city of Turin, "I realized that I was no longer surrounded by raving, hysterically nationalistic social deviants; I was now surrounded by raving, hysterically nationalistic social deviants in a frenzy." But even black humor bows out as Buford's tale of unrelenting, mindless violence and moronic patriotism unfolds, and the "lad culture" with its bloated code of maleness centered on the Saturday rite of soccer is revealed...

Dave Aronberg was his name, and despite the fact that he had already announced his candidacy for the Undergraduate Council, he appeared to share some of my interests. But Chaz's mother insisted that I room with her son; the other roommates were too loud and would disturb his studying, she worried...
Sarver's neighbor Dave Petteys, 48, got religion on that very principle a couple of years ago. He attended a demonstration with soil samples, one lifted from a field planted conventionally, the other under residue management. The first sample was a chunk of earth devoid of worms and compacted by the relentless assault of heavy equipment. A bucket of water poured on top of that soil ran off to the sides. The other sample was spongy loam abundant with worms, and the water disappeared on its surface and in a few seconds ran out the bottom...
...readers eventually grow up, and thus Gaines bears paternal responsibility for a large swath of pop culture from the past quarter-century. Virtually every stand-up comedy routine is a regurgitation of Dave Berg's Lighter Side strips. Underground artists from R. Crumb on have taken inspiration from Harvey Kurtzman (Gaines' editorial genius, who left after four years to launch a doomed satirical magazine for Hugh Hefner) and Mad's dense, rude cartoon style. Parodies of advertising and TV did not really exist before Mad invented the form. Ernie Kovacs, along with Bob and Ray, wrote free-lance for Gaines...
