...show is visually gripping; and much of the credit for this must go to David Hays' lighting, which is as inspired and effective as I have seen in a long time (and it contributes so much that I urge you to attend an evening rather than a daytime performance). Hays is not afraid to keep many of his light levels low, which is right since so much of the play takes place either at night or under dark clouds. Macbeth's hallucinatory ghosts at the banquet are effected entirely by lighting: this is also a wise decision, for Banquo...
...Weber: Serenade for Strings (The Galimir String Quartet with David Walter, contrabassist; Epic, mono and stereo). A sinewy, appealing excursion into atonality by one of the foremost U.S. members of the club. For three movements, Composer Weber has his strings weaving melancholy, attenuated fretworks of sound, giving way in the fourth movement to a darkly swelling choir and in the finale to a spasmodically defiant march. Fascinating, if a trifle low in body heat...
...secretary's mother, interviewed by Neurologists David D. Daly and Robert E. Yoss. said that she had been "fighting sleep all of my life." She could stay awake only while active ("If I sit down, I'm lost"), so she had to walk around the room all the time when she had guests. She fell asleep while playing cards. The diagnosis was narcolepsy (from the Greek narke, stupor, and lepsis, seizure). Relatively rare, its cause unknown, narcolepsy was not even known to run in families until the Mayo Clinic compiled records on more than 200 cases...
...Florida State's "Math Camp" in Tallahassee, the boys took time for dormitory bridge. One evening David Hackney, 14, of Daytona Beach, after bidding seven spades, laid down his 13 spades. The ensuing uproar was capped when Edward Root, 16, of St. Petersburg, jotted a formula on the blackboard, ran some figures through a table computer, did some paper work and announced that a bridge player could expect such a hand once in 635,013,559,600 deals...
Worried Stocks. Complicating the situation. United Steelworkers' President David J. McDonald last week presented union demands to the aluminum industry, whose contracts lapse July 31. Dave McDonald wants the same windfall for his 32,000 aluminum members as for his 500,000 steel-industry members: a three-year contract with a 15? hourly wage-and-benefit boost every year, plus cost-of-living hikes. The U.S. aluminum industry is softer than steel; if management accedes to a neat compromise package-perhaps iof an hour-it might speed a settlement in steel. If not, the aluminum workers may soon join...
