...excited over this latest episode in the long, sad history of American anti-intellectualism? Let me suggest that, as patriotic Americans, we should cringe in embarrassment that, at the dawn of a new, technological millennium, a jurisdiction in our heartland has opted to suppress one of the greatest triumphs of human discovery. Evolution is not a peripheral subject but the central organizing principle of all biological science. No one who has not read the Bible or the Bard can be considered educated in Western traditions; so no one ignorant of evolution can understand science...

...Horror, after all, is a genre that gravitates to the lurid edge. The jaded audience wants more--more teasing sex, more gross-out gore. So directors make their young minor characters play the sin-and-repent game: you have sex, then you die horribly. Makeup maestros like Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead) dream up (or nightmare up) grotesque faces and prostheses. ...heroic age of game development is over. Once, rival computer game companies strove mightily against each other, slaving until dawn to produce smarter, flashier, and above all faster software from scratch, every time they wrote a game. It was as if Hollywood were reinventing the movie camera every time it made a movie. Now a new trend is sweeping the games industry: instead of writing the software that creates their game world, game designers can buy the code off the rack, prefabricated...

What has hit home the most for me was befriending Chelie, a 15-year-old girl who lives in my boarding house. She left school a few years ago to earn money for her family and is up at dawn each day doing domestic chores until late in the evening. As a Harvard student, I complain about excessive homework, the lack of social life at school and what was served in the dining hall for dinner. The disparity between livelihoods is just so unbelievably vast. Who's the adult here? And this week, with this pained awareness of the grave...
