...true of Protestantism in general, small-town New England has been one of its hardest fought battle-grounds. Typical of the spirit is the story of the travelling salesman a generation ago who stopped in a Cape Cod village to pass the time of day with a customer, deacon of one of the four village churches, and asked casually about its welfare. "Well," replied the deacon, "we're three hunderd in debt. But," he added cheerfully, "the others is worse...
...most of it is so very good indeed! "The Deacon Speaks" is so much the real Kipling that Kipling need not be ashamed to own it. The Dunsany piece, "Apotheosis and the Peer", strikes this particular admirer of Dunsany as one of the high points in the collection. "A Wessex Tale" is quite Handyesque in tone and manner, though a keener study of Hardy might reveal to the writer the secret of that sureness of touch that makes the consumate artist. ...Little's acting was remarkable for its restraint and his understanding of the part. He never got "out of character" and, save in the drilling scene, he did not over-act. Mr. Williams, as Peer, the Deacon, and Mr. Packard, as the bailiff, showed real talent and never failed to make the most of their opportunities. Mr. Skinner was wholly delightful as Erasmus's younger brother. One could go on through the whole cast-- the acting was good throughout. From start to finish, it was a most artistic production of a highly entertaining play...
