Spinal Tap is, in the words of one enthusiast, "the world's loudest and stupidest heavy-metal band." Formed in the early '60s by Londoners Nigel Tufnel and David St. Hubbins, the group has weathered two decades of inframusical turbulence by mirroring, and milking just about every dead-end trend in rock 'n' roll. After flirting with the transcendelic movement (Listen to the Flower People), Spinal Tap went heavy-metal, with two-hour twin guitar solos and the eeriest special effects this side of Golgotha. The group's album Intravenous DeMilo went bronze (just...
Dignity is a quality that Shroeder Duncan, the laid-back loser of Murphy Guyer's Eden Court, would gladly settle for. Murphy has a dead-end job, a cluttered mobile home, a cynical pal (Steve Rankin) and a wife (the elfin Holly Hunter) who still carries a torch for Elvis Presley. This comedy's ambitions are no loftier than Shroeder's; it is just a tasty slice of lowlife, but full of sweet feeling for its tattered eccentrics. ...position. At 9:50 the scattered footsteps of researchers died down, and a guard with a megaphone could be heard methodically pacing the corridors, intoning at intervals. "The library is closing in 10 minutes...the library is closing in 10 minutes." Jack started panicking--he'd counted on his dead-end row of carrels being dark, but a graduate student was still engrossed in work four carrels away, and there was an overhead light that stayed obstinately on with no switch in sight. Time moved at a crawl, especially since he had incautiously put his head down directly...
Carrel # 164 was conveniently snuggled behind the Baltic and Finnish Literature at the end of a dead-end hallway, which was dark. Jack and Jill figured they couldn't do much better without giving themselves away on the stairs again. They chose a couple of desks hallway along the corridor Jack pretended to be asleep while Jill tried to fit in the windowsill She was just deciding that it wouldn't work, that it made more sense to look "naturally" asleep, when the footsteps approached briskly. The woman janitor who had seen them in the window was coming along...
...else can one explain his observation that "the ideological and strategic impasse at which Black America finds itself is a result of our leadership having tied itself to the liberal agenda?" There is no poll data or other evidence showing that Blacks think they are facing an ideological dead-end. A 1979 Roper survey found 80 percent of Blacks "agreeing" that "life for our children will be better than for us." A 1981 Roper survey found 69 percent of Blacks responding "very good" or "fairly good" to the query--"How do you think your chances are of achieving the good...
