Call for Liberty. Early in 1945, with Ataturk seven years dead and soldierly Ismet Inonu ruling Turkey in his place, Menderes abruptly ended his long obscurity. Boldly moving front and center, Menderes joined Banker-Statesman Celal Bayar and two other Deputies in presenting a resolution demanding that the government at long last put into effect the democratic liberties promised by the Turkish constitution. Soon the four rebels launched their own Democratic Party-the first genuine opposition party to be allowed by the ruling Republicans since Kemal Ataturk put Turkey on the road to democracy...

Looking West. Even his most implacable opponents do not quarrel with the main lines of Menderes' foreign policy. By sending the 5,000-man Turkish Brigade (717 dead, 2,156 wounded) to Korea, Menderes doused the memory of Turkey's World War II neutrality in a general wave of admiration for the tough Turkish soldier. Vermifuges often cannot reach the worms there, so most vet surgeons do a caecectomy...

...Make it look good, Achmed! My grandmother's watching on TV." All this and Timbuktu appeared in Thomas' latest color adventure, a grab bag of odds and ends on African superstitions. The oddest was a weirdly effective sequence showing how the Hova of Madagascar dig up their dead each year, roll them in shiny new wrappings and carry them about in a gay shuffle dance before returning them to their graves-a ritual precisely symbolic (though Thomas did not note it) of regular tribal practices among the TV idea men of Madison Avenue...

...scenes, translated almost literally from the page to the screen, the odor is cloying. On her deathbed the heroine pleads piteously, "You won't do our things with another girl, will you?" But she hastens to add, in the tone of a flapper who would not be caught dead with a conventional notion about sex, "I want you to have girls, though." He sobs, and she promises, with a ghastly smile, "I'll come and stay with you nights." She dies murmuring Hemingway's definition of death: "It's just a dirty trick...
