Your reference to "50,000 hopeless U. S. deaf-mutes" is unfortunately worded. I suppose you mean they are hopelessly deaf. But, you may be sure they are not hopeless and few are mute. The "deaf," meaning those who have been profoundly deaf from an early age, constitute the most admirable group I know of.
