...Thaksin effect pleases rural voters, who were charmed by the former P.M.'s populist health-care and micro-financing policies. But members of Bangkok's middle class and élite, many of whom were angered by a tax-free $1.9 billion business deal that Thaksin and his family profited from while he was in office, are rather less happy. The military, which went to the trouble of toppling him in 2006, surely is also irate over Thaksin's lingering shadow. ...against Mugabe. In part, this is because European and U.S. officials believe that the African Union - whose summit is under way in Egypt - should spearhead negotiations on Zimbabwe. Crist supporters cringed on Thursday when California governor and Crist pal Arnold Schwarzenegger - during his keynote speech at Crist's eco-summit...

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, in a piece in Thursday's Wall Street Journal aimed at pre-empting critics of the deal, wrote: "We will not accept [Pyongyang's] statement on faith. We will insist on verification." That, however, could plausibly be the next stumbling block with Pyongyang, since nothing in the agreements North Korea has signed at the six-party talks says anything about how exactly its compliance will be verified...
