...funding is still up in the air, and the UC’s money remains frozen. But UC-termbill derived funding of House Committees (HoCos), which last week appeared to be in jeopardy, will thankfully be unaffected. Credit for the change goes to the College administration. Last week, Assistant Dean of the College Paul J. McLoughlin II announced that money would only be forked over to the UC once receipts showing the eventual destination of its money had been handed over. That edict all but torpedoed upfront UC funding for student groups and for HoCos, which receive...
University President Drew G. Faust headlined a star cast of notables from Harvard and the world of playwrights to celebrate the opening of the New College Theatre on Holyoke Street last night. Dean of the Faculty Michael D. Smith and Dean of the College David Pilbeam participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony while prominent playwrights, including Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel, were featured on a panel. In tune with the bright red and purple décor of the venue—once the site of the old Hasty Pudding Theatre—the Office for the Arts at Harvard...

Eager Harvard freshmen attending a session on “Making the Most of Office Hours” yesterday grabbed treats along with tips on how to approach professors from a distinguished faculty panel, including the former dean of the College, Leverett Professor of Mathematics Benedict H. Gross ’71. For those in search of the secret for how to manage the initial one-on-one encounter with a professor, the main advice of the evening seemed to be simply to show up. The four faculty members...
Harvard’s search for a new dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study officially began yesterday as University President Drew G. Faust sent an e-mail to Radcliffe alums, faculty, and staff announcing the appointment of an advisory committee. Higgins Professor of Natural Sciences Barbara J. Grosz has served as interim dean of the institute since Faust, Radcliffe’s founding dean, moved to Mass. Hall on July 1. Homi K. Bhabha, the senior adviser in the humanities at Radcliffe and a member of the advisory committee, said yesterday that the committee will consider both internal...
