It gives Phillips Brooks' judgment of the religious character of Harvard College, and was written in March, 1887, in the first year after compulsory religious exercises in the University had been abolished, and the voluntary system introduced. The letter was written to Charles Lewis Slattery '91, now Dean of the Cathedral at Faribault, Minnesota, who has now given it to the Phillips Brooks House.
