...Between Arab and Jew, the taste of blood is not easily forgotten. Even while the U.N. Security Council was debat ing the extent of Israel's blame for its "punitive invasion" of Jordan two weeks ago, both sides were rolling up their sleeves for another battle. Israel, ever more touchy about the incursions of Arab commandos across the River Jor dan, massed troops, tanks and artillery in the Beisan valley south of the Sea of Galilee awaiting an excuse to renew the offensive. Jordan, cheered beyond measure by the fact that its troops had knocked out a dozen Israeli...
...Pigs. The room in Brazzaville's presidential palace was crowded with reporters and armed militia youths. Handcuffed to a chair was a terrified prisoner of war. Behind a table piled high with machine guns, hand grenades, plastic bombs, pistols and ammunition, stood President Alphonse Massamba-Debat, the picture of triumphant rage. "A commando group of 32 men landed at Brazzaville on the night of July 14," he announced. "Their mission was to assassinate your government leaders...

Eighteen commandos had been taken prisoner, he announced, and their fate would be placed in the hands of the people. "If the people say we should burn them alive, then we shall burn them alive. If the people say they should be buried alive, then we will bury them alive. And if the people say hang them, then we will hang them...
...known as Slimane Hoffmann, who now works for Algeria, is reported training 800 rebel commandos for use against the Leopoldville government. An incursion from Brazzaville could open a strategically valuable second front for the rebels and ultimately cut off Leopoldville from the sea. Brazzaville's President, Alphonse Massamba-Debat, would be glad enough to help: in his year-end radio message, he praised Red China, Ghana, Algeria and Egypt and muttered darkly about "little Hitlers" in Leopoldville. As if for emphasis, Massamba-Debat delivered the last page of his address twice...
