...idea. The media subsequently takes this man's journey and turns it into a huge event involving interviews, talk show appearances and documentary films. This is also a ridiculous idea. But this is the simple premise of Valparaiso (say: "val puh rise oh"), the new play making its stage debut at the American Repertory Theater this month. Its simple premise, however, is deceptive: Valparaiso was written by Don DeLillo, a master of illustrating the complex nature of even the simplest situation and the inherent ridiculousness of the culture we live...

...A.R.T.'s production of the play is impeccable. David Wheeler, who directed the debut of DeLillo's previous the-atrical outing, The Day Room (also at the A.R.T. in 1986), has taken a few minor liberties from the published script which pay off well. While in high school, she formed the rap trio the Fugees (short for refugees) with classmate Prakazrel ("Pras") Michel and Wyclef Jean, who went to a nearby school. The group's debut album, Blunted on Reality, sold poorly. Hill spent about a year at Columbia University but left school when the Fugees' second album, The Score, took off. It has sold more than 17 million copies worldwide...

Three Bad Boy releases--Notorious B.I.G.'s Life After Death, Mase's Harlem World and Combs' debut, No Way Out--each sold more than 3 million albums. I'll Be Missing You, Combs' 1997 elegy to B.I.G., who died in a drive-by shooting, outsold every other single that year except Elton John's tribute to Princess Diana, Candle in the Wind. "Puffy is one of the main reasons for hip-hop's mass appeal," admits Ruffhouse Records boss Chris Schwartz, a Bad Boy rival. "He's made the music more accessible...
