...Clinton's former Commerce Secretary denounces him and Morgan Stanley apologizes to its clients for paying him to speak, Clinton isn't the only one being damaged. His wife's Senate debut has been spoiled by the calls that are flooding her makeshift work space in the basement of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. Hillary last week went to three Brooklyn churches to talk about racial profiling--and ended up answering questions about whether she had properly reported the glittery handbags she'd received...
Meet Coldplay--singer Chris Martin, 23; guitarist Jonny Buckland, 23; bassist Guy Berryman, 22; and drummer Will Champion, 22--four fresh-scrubbed British lads who teamed up three years ago at University College London. The band's first full-length album, Parachutes (Parlophone), made its debut last May at the top of the British charts, went on to sell more than 2 million copies, and is now available in the U.S. on the Nettwerk America label. It shared the warbling vocals and slow, stately beat of Radiohead's more conservative efforts, and comparisons between the two bands ran amuck...
...kids who builds the best scooter, and right or wrong, they'll probably say "Razor." We're not eager to jump on the Razor bandwagon, but we have to say that its latest model is pretty sharp. A lightweight, battery-powered electric scooter, the Razor E ($330) makes its debut in April. With a top speed of 10 m.p.h. and a battery life of one hour, it's no match for a bike, but it's easy to drive and can outrun a cab at rush hour. And when you get home, just pull the battery off and take...
Open Helen DeWitt's debut novel, The Last Samurai, to a random page, and you may think you've stumbled upon some sort of guide to the Tower of Babel. There are bits of Greek and Japanese and Inuit. And, more than once, like weird typographical errors, a list of stops on the London Underground. This is babble with a purpose, though, which is all revealed in the fullness of a very satisfying--not to mention rapturously received--novel about a single mother and her genius...
...ferocity with artful though sometimes inscrutable lyrics. Like heavyweight champs, the band works the head and the body and scores points in both areas. Drummer Steve Shelley of the underground rock band Sonic Youth met Christina Rosenvinge, a Spanish singer, while he was traveling in Europe. Frozen Pool, her debut for his label, Smells Like Records, boasts an elegant cool, with Rosenvinge's crisp vocals breezing along like winter winds over smooth snowdrifts. The listener, chilly but charmed, is carried away. --By Christopher John Farley
