...each other or the locals. And that's why the French lionize them. This septet of risibly dysfunctional characters collectively known as Les Bronzés (the Suntanners) have become Gallic cultural icons. Their egotism and low-brow fixations are still catnip to French comedy fans even though their debut film hit the screens a full 28 years ago. Their second - and only other - sortie into cinema, Les Bronzés Go Skiing, released a year later, marked their last incarnation. It's been a long wait, but last week the whole team, older but definitely no wiser, returned...

...kind of voice that sounds intimate and precise coming out of radio speakers--and because she is far more determined and shrewd than anyone has given her credit for--she has survived the blows that inaugurated her career and managed to free herself from her scarlet AI. (I particularly liked her homage to Ludwig Erhard, the architect of the post-1945 Wirtschaftswunder - when was the last time that he got his due?) Gordon Brown, Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer, got a round of heartfelt applause...

...things went right for Apolo Ohno during his 2002 Winter Olympic debut. On the ice he won gold and silver medals in short-track speed skating, propelling the popularity of the hypnotically dangerous sport, in which athletes whirl around a 111-m oval with no lane markers while wearing 25-cm razor blades on their feet. Off the ice his wisp of a soul patch and X Games 'tude helped him dominate the event known as Olympic buzz. He was so popular in Salt Lake City that even female fans wore fake Ohno patches; afterward he was named...
