Alarm over the North China area larger than Ethiopia which Japan is trying to detach from China's Nanking Government by military intimidation and a "war without battles'' (TIME, Dec. 9) last week brought Chinese War Minister General Ho Ying-chin hotfoot to Peiping. After heroic haggling with the resident Japanese militarists, General Ho was expected to announce this week a "new status" for North China, ambiguous and unsatisfactory to all concerned. Fresh Japanese brandishing of Might was expected to follow...
...Majesty an expression of the Cabinet's grief on learning that not even Lord Dawson of Penn, who saved George V's life seven years ago, had been able to save the King's elder sister, H. R. H. Princess Victoria, who died last week (TIME, Dec...
Even for Paris excitement had mounted high on a Communist-Socialist tide of alarms that Fascist youngsters were going to attempt a coup d'état and hurl white-whiskered statesmen of the French Republic into the icy waters of the Seine (TIME, Dec. 9). Artist Waugh, spry at 74, produces about 75 canvases a year. The Grand...
...Longone interpolated a floor show by the popular dance team, Veloz & Yolanda. His innovation had its box-office effect but purists shuddered at his taste, as they did again when he permitted a Buick sedan to be exhibited in the opera house foyer. When Conductor Gennaro Papi resigned (TIME, Dec. 2), more than Longone's taste was questioned. Longone claimed that Papi was either unable or unwilling to conduct La Fiamma, that he was prejudiced against U. S. singers. Papi retaliated with the blazing charge that Longone permitted singers of indifferent merit to buy their way into his opera...
