Malagueña (Caterina Valente; Decca). A combination of German Weltschmerz and Latin languor that is not so odd as it seems. Songstress Valente was - born in Paris of an Italian father and a French mother, and lives in Germany. She sings Ernesto Lecuona's famous Cuban ditty in German with an elegant background of ghostly strings, muted brasses and castanets, and the result is stunning. Bestseller bound...
Open Up Your Heart (Cowboy Church Sunday School; Decca). "Smilers never lose and frowners never win," is the moral of this spellbinder, and a splendid group of really mean-sounding little boys gives it the ride it so richly deserves...
After three weeks of confusion, brought on when RCA Victor chopped its LP prices by about a third (TIME, Jan. 10), the record industry has settled into a recognizable pattern. Most of the songs are original versions selected from the 2,000-odd sides he recorded in two decades...

The U.S. may have changed in 20 years, but not Crosbyland: the emotions are pleasant, never heated, and just a bit weary, the words are confidently unsophisticated, the crooning exactly what it was when Bing made the first record put out by Decca (Just a Wearyin' for You) in 1934. Decca is launching its 20th anniversary "push" with the Crosby package, surrounded by a publicity campaign to recall some of its pioneering trade ventures (e.g., pop albums, children's records, original-cast recordings of Broadway shows). Among other Decca anniversary releases...
